A barbecue had been organised By outings officer Mick and we were all able to once again enjoy the beautiful surrounds of Henry Kendal Cottage.
The cottage is still AMAZING , having been built with convict labour in 1836-40. By Peter Fagan (originally a convict from County Neath) who received his freedom ticket in 1830).
He named his home and the acres he had been granted "Cooranbean"
Later, after several years , the Australian bush Poet Henry Kendall was befriended by the Fagans . He was in ill health at the time and lived with the Fagans during 1873-75.
He slept on a small sofa( that bears his initials still) in a room that still shows his sleeping arrangements today. We know the cottage today as Henry Kendall Cottage, even though he only lived there for a few years.
There is a lovely little museum on the grounds now and it is full of things that most of us remembered having seen in our parents or grandparents homes.... It is well worth a visit if you haven't been already.
Our Probus member Frank Courts who works tirelessly for the Brisbane Water Historical society helped organise the picnic/ barbecue for our club. Frank always makes sure there is bottomless tea and coffee on tap and made us some beautiful cakes and tarts etc to enjoy with the tea/coffee (before and after lunch). The grass is freshly mown and the museum etc is free for us to visit during our time there....... Thanks Frank....! We also had two visitors Derek and Ern, come along to check us out with the thought they might join our club.
Some photos below show and tell the story of another lovely Probus Club outing....

Henry Kendall Cottage
The original Cottage,
amazingly this shingle roof stood up to the big
storm in April that took many tile roofs off.....
Inside Henry Kendall Cottage,
Shhhhh .......
No cameras were allowed inside, so these pics are illegal,
Frank said "I'm not looking" so I was able to get these photos.
Henrys bedroom with his ensuite ! clearly visible on the left. |
The MAIN bedroom , note the Gazunders under the bed, note the very ancient cabin trunks on the right that probably arrived on the ship with Peter Fagan and or the woman he married .
Note The Ensuite to the left. One can't help but wonder how the young couples of today with there McMansions would cope with this tough way of life |
